In the BASIC search option, specify one or more search terms. Empty fields will be ignored.
All Fields searches the entire database, but the results can be mixed (searching Mainz retrieves books printed there as well as books bound there). Here one can search descriptive terms such as calfskin, beech, beaded, or yellow, and provenance terms such as Morris or Buxheim. For searching ranges of unspecified Goff numbers, enter (e.g.) A- or A-1. NB: Collections must be searched by their sigla (e.g., PrinUL, PrinU(C)L, or Scheide, not their names, e.g., "Princeton"), as listed in the "Collections" link.
Goff # requires the hyphen (e.g., B-526), and returns all records belonging to the specified edition.
Format has a pull-down menu for selecting f (folio), q (quarto), o (octavo), and s (all smaller formats).
Printer searches all terms entered in the printer column, including (for example) Aldus, Ratdolt, ben Hayyim, and Jordanus.
Collection searches the sigla of the participating institutions (Princeton University = PrinUL). A list of these sigla is found in the "Collections" link in the menu above.
Binding Era has a pull-down menu for selecting Early (15th- and early 16th-century), Later (later 16th- and 18th century), Modern (19th-21st-century), and Other (undefined).
Binding Region has a pull-down menu for selecting bindings assigned to Germany (including German-speaking regions such as Austria and Switzerland), Italy, France,, Low Countries (modern Belgium and The Netherlands), Spain, and Other (including Eastern Europe).
Binding Shop searches all terms entered in the bindery column, including (for example) K33 (any Kyriss number), Richenbach, and Augustiner.
Greater specificity is acquired by searching multiple fields at once. Results may be sorted by Goff number order, or any of the fields provided in the pull-down "Order by" menu.
In the CUSTOMIZED search option, users can build a powerful array of criteria by adding as many fields as desired. These include: Any Field, Printer, Goff #, Author, Title, Height, Width, Year, Collection, Binding Shop, Binding Era, Printer Location, Binding Region, and Format. For many of these fields users may specify logical operators such as "begins with" (for terms) or "greater than" (for leaf dimensions and date ranges). Generally, each additional field used reduces the number of search results returned.
